Even before they received a Shrine Club charter, Kauai’s Nobles had sponsored a football game on Christmas Eve of 1944, with the net proceeds going to Shriners Hospitals for Children—Honolulu.
Then on July 21, 1945 the Kauai Shrine Club was chartered with Hector Moir as its first President. Immediately the new club declared its intent to match the Maui Club’s donation of vegetables to the Honolulu hospital, and the Hawaii Island Club’s gift of meat, by arranging to provide the hospital’s needs of daily products on a regular basis.
Football games in ’45, ’47, ’51 and ’53 proved to be most successful and over the years the Kauai Shrine Club made donations to the Honolulu hospital totaling thousands of dollars. The ’51 game alone netted $3500 for the Honolulu hospital, while the ’53 games raised $5000.
Likewise, ceremonials in ’46 and ’49 added a modest number to the count of Noble creations in those years.
In the 60’s, the Kauai Club set up a program of football games built around the island’s Pop Warner teams. The club purchased uniforms for the Kauai team. This inter-island series produced a great deal of community interest.
The hot sands ceremonials on Kauai in ’56 and ’63 continue to be among the Aloha Shriner’s best remembered and most talked about initiations. The 1956 pilgrimage across the sands, and the mode of transportation for the journey will never be forgotten by those who were fortunate enough to have been participants.
Although the club had to drop its Pop Warner series because of the club’s small membership, the Kauai club has remained an enthusiastic and dedicated contributor to Shriners Hospitals for Children—Honolulu.
