Exploring Excellence: Highlights from the Shriners International Oriental Guide Leadership Conference

In a whirlwind of camaraderie and shared learning, the recent Shriners International Oriental Guide Leadership Conference illuminated the vibrant spirit of the Shriners organization. Held in the sunny city of Tampa, Florida, this conference served as a nexus for innovation, collaboration, and inspiration.

Attendees were treated to a rich array of presentations from both Shriners International and Shriners Children’s teams, offering insights into the latest advancements, initiatives, and best practices within the organization. From discussions on fundraising strategies to updates on patient care innovations, each session provided valuable knowledge and perspectives to enrich the attendees’ leadership journey.

One of the most heartwarming moments of the conference came with a surprise visit from patient ambassador Leigh Dittman, whose resilience and spirit served as a powerful reminder of the impact of the Shriners’ mission. Leigh’s presence infused the gathering with a sense of purpose and renewed determination, reaffirming the attendees’ commitment to serving children in need.

Among the attendees was Noble Jeremy Hollaway of the Aloha Shriners, who represented our temple (chapter) with honor as the Oriental Guide. His presence underscored the global reach and inclusivity of the Shriners organization, highlighting the bonds of brotherhood that unite members from across the world.

Beyond the main sessions, attendees also had the opportunity to participate in breakout sessions, networking events, and social gatherings, fostering connections and friendships that will undoubtedly endure long after the conference has ended.

As the curtains closed on another successful leadership conference, attendees departed with hearts full of inspiration and minds buzzing with new ideas. Armed with the knowledge gained and the connections forged, they returned to their respective chapters with a renewed sense of purpose and dedication to our noble cause.

What is an Oriental Guide? The title of “Oriental Guide” holds significant fraternal importance within the Shriners organization. It is bestowed upon the newest Noble (member) of a Shriners Temple (Chapter) upon their election to the Divan (Board of Directors). Functioning akin to the Fourth Vice-President of the fraternal chapter, the individual entrusted with this office bears both privilege and responsibility.

The designation “Oriental Guide” derives its origin from the rich tapestry of Middle Eastern lore, reflecting the broader thematic underpinnings prevalent within the Shriners fraternity. This distinctive title, like much of the Shriners’ fraternal lexicon, traces its roots to the Golden Age of Fraternalism, a period during which fraternal organizations worldwide embraced cultural motifs as integral elements of their identity and tradition.
